The Five Percenters were started in January 1998 by Rioch Edwards-Brown and Ian Brown who were wrongly accused of shaking their baby in 1995. After trying to clear their names for two and a half years through an official Complaint Procedure, they went to the press.

Rioch Edwards-Brown set out to find out whether she and Ian were, in the words of the doctors, a "one off" case. Since January 1998 she has been contacted by 352 British families and the numbers continue to grow.
